Shade-Dri®,
even though it is black, keeps your logs cool. In the evaporation
process, the moisture in the logs cools the air around them. Shade-Dri®
helps hold this coolness in by reducing the heat from the sun. This
reduces the heat that can cause premature drying out of the sapwood
that causes checking and splitting.
Unlike sprinkling water on logs, which pollutes the ground with
high levels of wood acid from the runoff, Shade-Dri® is environmentally
safe. White wood logs such as Hard and Soft Maple, Ash, Hackberry,
White and Yellow Pine which cannot be sprinkled can be covered
safely for short periods of time. To reduce the risk of enzymatic
stain, white wood logs should be sawn within two weeks after felling
and stacked within 12 hours of sawing.
On a cool day you will not notice a temperature difference between
the log side under Shade-Dri® and outside Shade-Dri®. On a hot day,
however, the temperature with freshly cut logs is up to 15 degrees
cooler under Shade-Dri®. As time passes, the temperature difference
becomes less distinct as the logs continue to lose moisture.
Some
of our customers use Shade-Dri® in conjunction with sprinkling
while others use Shade-Dri® only.
Most log covers are purchased in widths of 24 ft., 30 ft., 36
ft., or 40 ft. For 36 and 40 ft. widths, we recommend the length
not be over 50 ft. as the Shade-Dri® becomes hard to handle, particularly
if it becomes muddy.
In covering logs, it is easiest and safest to cover them as you
build your log pile and uncover them as you use them.
