A Frugalmans Shed is one without a roof. Pile covers are
used in place of a roof. The structure is made out of I-beams
or treated wood poles imbedded in the ground. Shade-Dri® curtains
are hung from cables stretched from beam to beam. This keeps most
rain from entering the stacks of lumber while keeping most of
the sun, wind and dirt off the stacks. The closer the stacks of
lumber are to each other, the less rain will hit the stacks. Make
sure that the curtains will not rub against the lumber when the
wind blows. *In some states there may not be property taxes levied
for a structure without a roof.
Figure 1:
Top section of curtain is attached to support cable with quick
links or spring links. Each support cable should not be over 40
feet long.
Figure 2:
Eye bolt or eye screw and turnbuckle provide tension adjustment
to support cable from which the curtain hangs. Attach cable to
turnbuckle with at least 3 cable clamps.
Figure 3:
For windy areas a crossed rope barrier should be used to protect
the curtain from the rough edges of the lumber. For access to
the bay simply untie the laced curtain at the bottom and pull
to one side using the pull rope, untie the crossed barrier on
the bottom to gain access to the lumber.
Figure 4:
Pull rope is tied to top corner of curtain to easily pull open
curtain for bay access.
Figure 5:
Lace rope or cord through curtain grommets on the side and around
support posts to secure curtains.
Figure 6:
It is recommended that pile covers are be placed on top of the
stacks of lumber.
